Subject: $250 RD headers and saw catalog for 24-valve head (long)

Hey guys, I saw that Racing Dynamics was having a sale on their equal-length headers and decided to jump on it. (I'm not sure if they have any sets left as they were going fast. Contact Frederico @ 714 540 5100).

I dropped by and got a chance to talk for a while with Frederico, the president of RD. He's a really nice guy and showed me the two 3.5 E46 M3s he's driving. Actually he sometimes drives a Hyundai Tiburon, too. Apparently Hyundai dropped the car off and wanted to know if he could tweak it. Hmmmm.

Anyway, we got to talking and he pulled out the original RD catalog (pre-1988). I asked him if I could have a copy, but he was kind enough to xerox his only copy for me. In the catalog I saw the fabled 24-valve head. It looks like a pent-roof design with a centrally located spark plug, but it looks like the angles on the intake side are less steep than on the exhaust side. He said it used a timing chain vs belt, and that it made about 255hp (not sure whether that was the K25 or K27). They used an entirely new casting for the head and not a re-work of a stock head. They only made about 10 of these things and they sold for about $8,000. The catalog says they were slated for availability in mid-1988, but because of the price of the head and the availability of the M3, production was ceased.

I told him that he should put the catalog on the his Web site, and he seemed curious and interested that people would care to see that "old catalog." Hopefully he'll scan it in soon. I'll pester him if not ;-)
