"Shawn Michaels hosted Smackdown at the WWF New York restaurant last night. For the record, the Smackdown airings at WWF New York usually don't draw much of a crowd, even when wrestlers host. However, the place was absolutely packed last night with just "standing room only" available by 7:30 p.m. This was especially surprising since Michaels hasn't been had much of a TV presence, other than his stints as commissioner, since before the big wrestling boom in the late '90s.
Michaels was announced as one of the key figures responsible for the WWF reaching the heights it has. He came out to a huge pop and a loud chant of "HBK," which he said he never gets tired of hearing. He looked to be in very good shape and was wearing his cowboy hat, as always. He emphasized to the crowd that he has no involvement in wrestling and even seemed kind of sad and bitter when fans pressed him on the subject. He said if the fans wanted to know what his status with the WWF was, they'd have to speak to management because he "doesn't even have the keys to the door anymore."
Michaels said he will be meeting with Vince McMahon today to discuss his future and that drew a big pop. When asked what his favorite matches were, he mentioned the WrestleMania X ladder match, the WrestleMania XII Iron Man match, the first Hell in the Cell, and Mind Games with Mick Foley as his top four. He said if he returned, he'd most like to work with Rob Van Dam (big "RVD!" chant) and Ric Flair. He also mentioned Chris Benoit, The Rock, and Chris Jericho.
One fan asked him what he thought of possibly reuniting with Hall, Nash and Triple H (no mention of Sean Waltman.) Shawn said if they all ever got back together again, "The wrestling world would never be the same" (again, another huge pop). When asked about his wrestling school, he said he has sold it and, thus, has no link to pro wrestling. He said he has been spending his time with his wife and son.
Michaels signed autographs for a long line of people. Overall, he was very cool and gracious, and took time to slap every hand in the audience and sign every autograph. He will be the guest on TNN's Excess tomorrow."
It is very interesting. Wonder if he will ever make a comeback.
He is meeting with Vince today, let's hope good O'L JR keeps us up too date in the Ross Report. Long live The Showstoppa!!!
