Hey PeteDad,

That is really cool about the history you shared about
Ice Houses and the Harvesting of Ice that took place on the frontier prairie by your ancestors.

Our grandparents have told us similar accounts that happened in our areas long ago that took place they
knew of, and been recorded in county and city history
books of our areas.

People here did simialr, including our grandpas, like those did in your area to harvest and store ice in Ice Houses,
cut with long saws the ice blocks from many of the many
lakes we have in our areas, but on property of our relatives.

These history books show photos of the teams of horses and
owners harvesting the ice and transporting for storage for
use in the warm weather months. Also, photos of ice houses
these books have published, too.

It is mentioned some ice was even shipped out in refrigerator railroad boxcars on some of the several
railroads that operated locally and ran through this
area.

You are right, ice could last until August or longer
IF ice was harvested right and cut into really thick
ice blocks!

Homemade ice cream and cold drinks could be found
abundantly here, too!

Different resturants, eating places and hotels in
the areas here relied on harvested ice being apart
of their businesses, too!

One history book here has a photo of an ice wagon
in it and the man who owned it would chip off pieces
of ice, small and large and give to kids to enjoy
sucking on to help them cool down and other ice blocks
and chips helped to refrigerate ice boxes to keep foods
cold and caught fish from the nearby rivers, screams cold!

The use of straw for packing in between blocks of ice, etc.
is mentioned and told about in the history books with some
pages showing photos.

One business we read about sold ice and oil/gasoline for a living.
