Subject: Blizzard

What started out as a great Christmas for me and my family was interrupted by a bad snowstorm and blizzard.

Christmas Eve day and night were fine, I visited some of my extended family in the area and riding snowmobile. Christmas Eve Mom, Dad, Jesse and his girlfriend, Cassie and I gathered at our house for dinner and to exchange gifts. Later we went into town to attend Midnight Mass at church.

Christmas Day both sets of my grandparents and an uncle and aunt came for dinner and we exchanged more gifts. The weather began to get bad, it started raining and later changed to sleet/ice, and later to snow. The snow became very heavy, dropping a total of 14 inches on us. Later the winds began to blow, and then really blow. Our power was knocked out about 2:00 AM Monday morning, leaving us without electrical power until 7:00 last evening.

Fortunately, we have two LP gas back-up generators on our ranch. One to provide electricity to our house to keep the furnace, stove, refrigerator and a couple of lights going and the other to keep our wells and farms buildings going. If our wells don’t work, our cattle can’t drink.

Our cattle made it through the storm in fine shape, three did wonder off but we found them and returned them to the heard. We make sure they have food and water.

The wind blew the snow into huge drifts in our yard. Dad and I took our tractor with the bucket and our Bobcat and we began to clear snow from our yard. We just pushed it into huge snow piles.

We were better off than some people. At least we had heat and a way to cook our food, people who didn’t had to travel over bad roads to stay at shelters. In a town 25 miles away, the power company was able to restore power quickly, so they had the school open the gym for people who didn’t have heat. People had to bring their own sleeping bags, blankets, food etc., but it was better than freezing. The temps dropped to near zero a couple of nights.

Reggie sure enjoys the snow, he loves playing in it. While I was driving the tractor clearing snow from our yard, he insisted on riding with me.

It is great to be back on full power. To conserve we power, we used our fireplace and candles in the evening to help light the house. It seemed primitive, but it was kind of fun too.

We survived the blizzard of Christmas 2016.
