Subject: The comments in the AskHistorians thread confirm that the quote is consistent with Johnson's language in that he often used the n-word. However, the quote is not consistent with the sentiments he conveyed in other private conversations. He truly believed in equal rights, he just lived at a time when someone could say the n-word and no one would think anything of it.
