I would be forced to agree with you that it is mostly just a natural decline. Civilization stagnated and therefore began to decay. But as far as the 'Conspiracy' theories go... the 'elite' WOULD stand to gain something thru the decline: POWER. Society would weaken (as most things do when run into the ground) and that would make it easier to control. Apathy would be 'their' most powerful weapon -- people that don't care, don't question. I have a hard time believing everything is 'just a coincidence'. There are just too many coincidences. I agree that the 'christian' groups have their theories (that they will never call 'conspiracy') but I think if there is a conspiracy, they probably have something to do with it. Nearly EVERY major holocaust, purge, war, etc... has some 'christian' sitting behind the curtain (or in the case of the Inquisition, in front of it).
I think it comes from their insane belief that their religion is the only true one and that everyone else is evil for not thinking the same way as they do. They even go after separate factions within their own group (like the current (as of at least 1-2 centuries now) state of Ireland).

"Hell in a handbasket", my grandmother used to say. I think I see what she meant.
