Kalya gingerly stepped onto the burning Sands, but in a second she didn't even feel the pain. She was here, where she had always dreamed of being, and the sands were the last thing on her mind as she gazed at all the eggs, walking as close as she dared and admiring their beauty. A flash of memory caught her, and this time she let the memory come, for it was inevitable, really, she would find it in the hidden recesses of her mind sooner or later...

She had peaked out from the brush, in her ragged, worn-torn clothes, this being her fifth day away from her father's small hold, and she was a runaway. She saw him look about nervously, and bury a small, whitish object under some refuge in the trash. Kalya's eyes lit up as she had known it must be something important...

She shivered slightly, even though the sands were warm, for though she had come to terms with her father, and forgiven him, she had still not wholly come to terms with her best friend Joth's death. And this object she would find in the trash would, in most ways, change her life forever.

Kalya had crept out, her rags clinging to her body as she rummaged as quietly as she could through the trash, finally finding her prize-the white-green egg. For her! Then she paused and bit her lip. Joth had helped her escape, the lizard should rightfully go to him! Bearing the egg proudly to Joth, she deposited it in his lap, grinning from ear to ear. "I don't know what it is, Joth, but fada tried to hide it, so it must be 'mportant." Joth had stared at the egg as if it were a miracle.
"Doncha know wha' this is, 'Lya?"
"No..." she had replied apprehensively.
"It's a fire lizard egg!"
"A what?"
Joth had stared at her in shock, then shook his head and explained it. "Little critters that look like-" before he had finished his sentence, her father had found them and taken her home, though luckily he had been too busy with something or the other to punish her. So when Joth had told her that he needed her, she had come, and the egg had Hatched.

Thank Faranth for that wonderful fire lizard egg! If she had not seen the creature inside, seen how it was absolutely loyal to Joth, and how he could talk to her with his mind, and how she could go between...

"'Ll call 'er Dawn Sister!"
"Great name, Joth!"
The green flit had come cheeping out happily, and Joth had fed it, and Impression had been made. They were irreversibly bonded until death would one day make them part.

That egg was the thing that had caused her to believe, later, that Joth had not been lying about the creatures she had seen in the sky, that there really were dragons. If not for that, she wouldn't be here most likely. Oh, she would have run away eventually, but without her hope of Impressing a queen, to change Pern, she would have waited longer, and been too beaten down to have any hope of saving her life.

But her life was not in the gutter yet, no eggs had hatched, and she still had the chance to help change her beloved Pern, make it a better place, and maybe, someday, stop people like her father from keeping their children from having dreams...

Snapping out of her thoughts, she sat down in a corner, content to stare at the many, beautiful eggs in front of her, but what awed her most was the beautiful queen Kylith, whom she had never had a chance to see before. Was she an example of what every queen looked like? To change Pern-that was her dream, to make a difference!
