Kalya saw the cracks in the mottled gold shell, and held her self tall, apprehension and expectancy laced into every feature of her being. The gold's metallic hide glinted in the sunlight, and the small queen stepped proudly forward, and Kalya began to shake as she realized that the gold was heading towards her! With a small yelp of excitement, Kalya fell forward on her knees, and they hit the ground hard, scraping them, but Kalya hardly noticed. She quickly got back up, just in time for the beautiful gold to nudge her shoulder.
My name is Layath, Kalya. You Impress me.
Simple words, but with so much love, kindness and understanding behind them that Kalya soon felt tears of joy streaming down her face, falling onto the ground in large droplets. Here was a creature, her soulmate, who knew her faults and understood them, accepted them! It was beyond words, the magic untouched of that moment was imprinted on her mind forever.
And I'm starving!
Kalya hugged Layath to her. "Layath, oh my beautiful, marvelous Layath, more than I could have dreamt of in a thousand turns!" The queen tilted her head, looking into Kalya's eyes, with her beautiful whirling ones.
We will change Pern, Kalya. Layath stated matter of factly.
"Of course we will Layath. I never doubted it, dear heart."
Layath looked at Kalya again.
I am still hungry.
"Oh, of course, Layath!" Kalya cried, guilt washing over her. "Let's go to the Bowl and feed you."
That is a good idea. Layath replied.
Her mind suffused with love and wonder, Kalya and Layath left for the Bowl, each with thoughts of how wonderful the other was, how kind, caring, intelligent, and beautiful their counterpart was.
