The waiting was beginning to annoy him.

Taran fidgeted again, and considered talking to someone. Though he wasn’t sure he wanted to disturb the mood, he felt the need to talk. This was perhaps the first time he had been in a situation this tense without his twin. At once he missed Arden’s familiar calm presence, and wondered where his brother was.

“I don’t want to go to the Hatching.” Arden had told him. “Because if I do, then you’ll still be to dependant on me. You have to do this on your own – we can’t both Impress.”

Taran had to think he might have a point. Identical they may be, but they couldn’t stay like that for the rest of their lives. He pictured himself riding a blue dragon over the ocean, with Arden and a dolphin in the water below them. That would be a good thing.

He sidled nervously up to a girl and grinned cheerfully at her. “Alright?” He muttered. “’M Taran.”
