She had Impressed.

Matt looked up in shock as the green chose Synthis, looked longingly after her as she led Xiualith off to the Bowl. What could he do? Nothing.

Again he looked back to the clutch, hardly daring to take his eyes off her until she was gone, and he concentrated his gaze firmly on the eggs. One of the blues…it was all he asked for. That was all he wanted.

All? Since when was a dragon “Just” something? Dragons were wonderful – the guardians of Pern, the life partners of any people who Impressed them. Lok was, if not forgotten, pushed to the back of his mind as Matt again indulged in a dream of sitting astride a flaming dragon. She would understand. Maybe he could even visit her and swim with her when he was a rider. He hoped so.

Odette would kill him.

That was one thing he was certain of. She would murder him – once for betraying Lok, and once again for not telling her his motives. Lok was old enough to understand he didn’t have to be with her all the time – not like one of the calves had been, when his dolphineer left him for a few minutes – and he hoped she would forgive him.

Besides, he was getting ahead of himself. He might not even Impress. This was his second clutch, after all. Maybe he wouldn’t get a dragon after all. But he knew, with a sinking of his heart, that he and L’van were rivals now. Properly.

He didn’t dare speak. He didn’t look anywhere but the clutch before him, and he didn’t move as he saw the eggs twitch.

He had to concentrate.

“Hmm?” He looked up as Jay apologised for his fire-lizard’s antics, but he seemed so far away that he had to blink to come back into the real world.

Matt looked on with the rest as the brown exploded from his egg, and he sucked him his breath with a hiss when the fragment hit the hatchling on the head. He sympathised with the hatchling a lot – why wasn’t anyone helping him? – and was just taking a step closer to the brown when a voice sounded in his head.

It was a feeling as much as a voice – a strange rush of happiness, a chime like a bell that rang through him and echoed within his very being until he shook his head to rid himself of the rippling. When he recovered from a shock that had lasted no more than a second, he was aware of what had been said to him.

M’att! It’s all so pretty…so many colours…but why are there two of you? And my name…my name is…Ashertith! Are there two of me as well?

The hatchling was beginning to stumble towards him, his wings folding themselves again as Matt – no, M’att now – ran towards him, ready to help him with his footing, and stroking his head until his eyes came into focus at last.

You haven’t said anything yet. Ashertith remarked plaintively. Why not?

‘I…’ There seemed to be no reply. ‘I suppose I was just shocked. And you make me feel dizzy.’

Do I? The brown shook his oaken head as final clarity came to him, and made a step towards the way out of the Hatching grounds. I’m sorry. But…can I have some food now? Please?

The weyrling came close to laughter. ‘You can! C’mon, Ashertith, let’s go to the Bowl. There’s someone I want you to meet…’
