Salty could see his sister’s frustrated expression at Greythorn’s words – he knew she could hear noise, and knew that it was coming from the other boy, but because he wasn’t looking at her she didn’t know what he had said. Rather like when you can hear voices in the next room, and distinguish between them, but you can’t make out what they are saying. Then she frowned for a moment, and met her brother’s eyes, signing [Voice?] and then jerking her head in Greythorn’s direction. Now, Salty had not missed this little change in his friend, and he nodded to Elly, confirming her suspicion that yes, Greythorn’s voice was deeper. Salty himself had an ordinary voice – nothing special, and he couldn’t sing to save his life, but it was his, and he liked it. Elly would have been an alto had she been able to sing, and her voice was rather deep for a girl’s of her age.

A quick flash of Salty’s hands translated Greythorn’s words for her, and though she returned Shadow’s smile, it was not without a hint of confusion. [Yes. I really enjoy it! I like having something to do.] Elly replied to his question. She loved being able to do something useful. [Why did G call you T-A-L?] It was much easier to use the first letter of a person’s name to refer to them by than to spell out their whole name each time you wanted to indicate them. Then she smiled shyly. [His voice has changed. It has been too long since I have seen you both.] It was a little disconcerting to think that in the time they hadn’t spoken, Greythorn had changed so much and Shadow’s name had even changed. Had Elly been that type of girl, she would have felt disappointed at being left out. But as it was she was so overwhelmingly practical that she just figured that at least she knew now, so what was wrong with not knowing then?
