Seeing Halzay’s blush at the unexpected compliment, Atiyana nudged her friend in the ribs. “Is there any person you won’t flirt with?” She asked playfully – smiling to Halzay to assure her that she was only joking. Atiyana’s philosophy: when in doubt, lighten the mood.

“Oh, I don’t know.” S’peer shrugged in mock-consideration. “W’ntyr. X’thrall. Any of the bronzeriders…”

“I notice I’m not on that list.”

“I’m allowed to flirt with you.”

“Says who?”

“You did. A few months ago.”

This stumped Ati – she had, indeed, given S’peer permission to flirt with her. Choosing to ignore this, she turned her attention back to Halzay. “Sorry. We’re always like this.”

“No we’re not.” S’peer said with a lazy smile. “I can usually never get a word in edgeways.” The presence of a friend emboldened him, and he looked at Halzay solemnly. “She’s only behaving herself because you’re here.” He told her with the utmost mock-sincerity, receiving another poke from the girl sitting next to him.

“Ignore him.” Atiyana told the greenrider. “S’peer never knows when to stay quiet.” She picked up the various jugs that were lined up on the table, examining the contents.

“Says she.”

“She does, yes.” Ati picked up a cup. “Is it alright if I drink?”

“Go ahead.”

All of S’peer’s friends asked him this question before they picked up alcohol in his presence – they knew that it was hard for him, to have that temptation right in front of him. But the bluerider would never deny someone else their pleasure just because he couldn’t share in it. Atiyana, of course, had no thought for the fact that Halzay might not understand why she had asked for S’peer’s permission…why should she? When did Ati ever think deeper than the current situation?

Exactly.
