G’rein watched his weyrmate leave the table, lost in thought for a moment, but was brought back to reality by S’peer, who gently touched his arm to get his attention. For a moment the greenrider couldn’t help but reflect how intimate the gesture looked, but he shrugged that thought away, turning to face the bluerider, who leaned across the table to speak to him.

“I was just messing around before, you know.”

G’rein gave him a slightly puzzled smile. “I know. Of course I know. What makes you say it?”

“You and X’thrall make such a good couple – I just wanted you to know I wasn’t serious.”

G’rein’s smile widened, and he leaned forwards as well, their faces close. “You really think so?”

“Of course! You look like you fit so well.”

The greenrider nudged him a little shyly. “It means a lot – to hear you say that.”

“Why? And why are you whispering like this?”

“I don’t want anyone else to hear. And it means a lot…I don’t know. I wanted your approval.”

S’peer chuckled, shaking his head. “My approval? What for?” He paused, a slow smile spreading over his face as it dawned on him, and leaned over again. “You’ve really fallen for him, haven’t you?”

G’rein’s smiled turned a little embarrassed, but it was still a smile – a wide one. “Well…”

“You have!” The bluerider’s eyes warmed with affection, and he reached over to rest his hand on G’rein’s shoulder for a moment. “I knew you seemed different! That’s great!”

“Really? Y-you really think so? I’ve never felt like this before…I…” G’rein bit his lip. “Are you alright with it?”

S’peer never lost his smile. “Why wouldn’t I be? What we had…it was good, but it was…it was all physical. I mean, we’re best friends, and everything. It’s not like either of us was emotional about it.”

G’rein nodded. It was true. He and S’peer were a good flight couple, each knowing best how to pleasure each other, but they had never been in love. They were just…friends. Really close friends. Normally if you’re like that, you would say you’re like brothers. But G’rein and S’peer: brothers? It would be a serious case of incest…

“Does he feel the same way?” S’peer asked, curiously. X’thrall hadn’t showed many of his feelings – he was a hard person to read.

“I-I think so. I mean…neither of us has ever said anything about it, but…he seems to. And I just…I love him so much. Everything about him. His voice, his nature…”

“His body.”

“…Yeah. That bit especially…” G’rein winked at S’peer conspiratorially. “…But, when he’s around me, I feel different. Better. Happier. And I want to stay with him.”

G’rein reached for his cup, but S’peer stayed his hand, pressing it back onto the table. “You should tell him.”

“What? Why?”

“So he knows. I was watching him back there – he doesn’t know what to think of me.” S’peer folded his arms. “You love him. He should know that. Neither of you deserve to be hurt.”

G’rein smiled again. “Thanks. I’ll tell him. I promise. Just one thing…how was I different?”

The bluerider chuckled. “You didn’t act…like…” He shook his head. “I don’t know how to put it! You weren’t all over him. That’s how I could tell you’re serious.”

“You’d think it’d be the opposite!”

“It’s a strange world! So you will?”

“I will!” G’rein sipped meditatively at his wine. “I’ll wait for…what was it the old weyrling master always said?”

“The opportune moment?” They both smiled at the memory. They had both been taught by the weyrling master at different times, but he remained the same. And the “opportune moment” was something G’rein hoped would come soon…

((That OK?))
