Martan smiled in recognition of the boys' names, used to the way dragons usually reacted to him. He didn’t mind it – it wasn’t pity, it was distress at knowing one of their own kind had been killed, leaving his rider there. The two things were different – at least where the ex-rider was concerned. He didn’t want pity. He had been given enough of it over the years, and it just got on his nerves.

He watched with interest as the fire-lizards made their appearance at the table. Sarri, ever the small queen, hopped from his shoulder to examine the newly-hatched blues, chirping her satisfaction with the air of a great matriarch who is pleased with the babies shown her. She looked hard at M’telle’s egg, warbling as she fluttered back onto her human’s shoulder and the safety of his presence.

“Doesn’t look too soft. Sarri reckons on a bit longer.” Martan offered, and hearing her name the queen flipped her wings in pride. The man smiled his slow smile. “Sorry if she’s a bit rude. When I got her I wasn’t very good at training her, and now she thinks she owns the Weyr.”

A drudge placed a hot mug of klah before him, and he smiled gratefully as she left, taking a sip. “Looking forward to training?”
