((K’rea will come a bit later, promise. Anyway, my dear Puppy, you did it wrong anyway. You’re supposed to highlight EVERY pronoun, not just some. Ahem. I agree with GC, it’s silly to do everything. I’m just highlighting the names in the name slot, and each time a new name enters. Perhaps I’ll decorate dialog, if the need arises, but I don’t believe it will. Then again, when he had four, it probably saved a bit for him... ::wonders:: Anyway, I tried HARD not to power-play Faini’s baby goldie, so... bare with me, please!
By the way... this is LONG! Little warning... but, I had to give them SOMETHING to have been doing all that time away!))

As the golden glimmer found its way onto the beach, where Faini’s poor flit must’ve resorted to looking once she couldn’t find the boys, Graythorn instantly jumped up from the sand, grabbing Shadow’s hand and pulling him to his feet. For the last few months—seeing as K’rea had impressed, Salty and Terent hadn’t called, and the girls were... being... girls... without them—Graythorn and Shadow had spent almost every waking moment bonding, and now, surprisingly, had a very strong, solid friendship. This, of course, was weird in itself for the fact that, though they were in the same group, the Weyrbrats, that they adored... they were not exactly on the same side of the totem pole. While Shadow was quiet, shy, and prone to see the world through much darker eyes, Graythorn was loud, outgoing and sometimes considered much more happy-go-lucky compared to most. While in the eyes of the other Weyrbrats (most likely) they looked like an impossible pair, they had become just about as close as Graythorn and K’rea had been before impression, and THAT was saying something.

Graythorn, after steadying Shadow, who had tripped on the way up, grinned to the flit, which probably hadn’t yet had the time to fly over to them. Though the two of them, now both sixteen, were very much out of practice—the others hadn’t called them in ages—they were well drilled, and raring to get going. The much more outgoing of the duo held out his arm, his grin still in place, and if the gold perched, he stroked her head softly. If not, he just lowered his hand; either way, he spoke to her.

“Hey, baby goldie. Faini and Cara want us back?” He laughed, and didn’t even really wait for an answer. If she chose to fly back, neither boy stopped her, but if she perched on either, they’d also let her. Graythorn turned to Shadow and winked. “So, you wanna go then, Tal?”

To most people who could’ve possibly heard the conversation here—and know Graythorn and Shadow—would find two things odd about the teens, mainly Graythorn. First of all, Graythorn had been teased for ages by just about everyone for his voice, which despite his age hadn’t quite changed. Now, however, in the time he’d been away from the Weyrbrats, his voice had acquired a nice, deep tone, between high bass and low tenor. While Shadow, who had been living around the boy for months on end now, didn’t notice and Graythorn didn’t think about it, the Weyrbrats, spare the hard of hearing Elly, would DEFINITELY notice. The second thing was that anyone overhearing this must believe they misheard. The boy’s name was Shadow, so Graythorn must’ve said “pal” and it translated weird in their mind. However, Graythorn had given Shadow this nickname about a week after they started hanging out, and he responded just as readily as he did to Shadow. The reason was simply this; his name was Shadow because his father named him Shadow. When his mother took custody, she had wanted desperately to rename him to be like a mix of Shadow’s mother and step-dad... which turned out to be Talmor. Shadow had never really taken to the name, but Graythorn had thought it cool, saying it was very rider-ish. And so, now Graythorn had about four names for Shadow; plain Shadow, ‘Dow, Talmor, and the very popular Tal.

“’Course I do,” Shadow said softly, giving a small smile to his best friend. “Haven’t been summoned in a while, have we?”

“Nope,” Graythorn winked, and turned on a heel, a trick Shadow had taught him. He started to walk, and Shadow caught up easily, falling into step beside him. Sighing, he flicked back a lock of shadowy hair, and his red-brown eyes met Graythorn’s.

“Weird, innit?” Shadow asked thoughtfully in his deeper, mysterious voice that caused most people to flee from him, but made no distress for Graythorn. “I mean, we’ve been alone so long, it’ll be weird to have the others interrupt.”

“Weird, but kinda refreshing,” Graythorn agreed, pointedly trying to change step and scowling playfully when Shadow changed step with him. “Can’t believe it’s been so long.”

“Is it so bad that we got time to bond?” Shadow asked blinking. With Shadow, there were some times when one couldn’t quite tell whether he was serious or joking, and one would have to hazard a guess. This was one of them, but, thankfully, Graythorn knew Shadow pretty well by now, and could tell exactly what to say.

“Bond?” He asked, pretending to have no idea what he meant. “Hm. Now what do you mean by that? Because geesh, Tal, I don’t believe I swing that way—” he was cut off when Shadow smacked him on the back of the head, but was pleased to see a smile on the other boy’s face. Apparently, he’d guessed right... again. It was amazing to him that, only last time the group had been together, he’d been the worst at judging the boy’s attitude.

They entered the Lower Caverns laughing in the same way, and it was probably a weird sight for the Weyrbrats. Graythorn and Shadow... laughing like brothers? They’d never gotten along before... but, it was clear neither had actually changed the other’s personality too much by their laugh alone. Graythorn was still silly and good-natured, and Shadow was still quiet and resolved. However, they still seemed unnaturally close, or at least probably to those who didn’t know of their strange, developed friendship.

“Hey, guys!” Graythorn said happily, sliding into a seat where he was next to an empty one for Shadow, whom he knew would sit with Elly—the boy’d let it slip once that he fancied her. Shadow, in turn, sat down next to Elly, giving her one of his small, distant half-smiles. Graythorn continued. “Sorry we’re late, Tal and I were at the beach, so we had to run.” Of course, neither Graythorn nor “Tal” really registered the fact that Graythorn’s voice had completely changed, or that no one knew Shadow was called Tal now.

Shadow turned to Elly. [Hey,] he sighed, and looked at her uniform curiously. [Is that a healer uniform? Are you starting healing?] Even though he spoke with his hands rather than his mouth, it was clear that he was interested.
