Author: S'peer - -Scarth
Subject: Some people figure they can never win.
In reply to: Halzay (Lizzie) 's message, "But not all..." on 19:36:59 01/15/06 Sun

“W’ntyr trusts people easily.” S’peer explained, feeling minor relief at both Halzay’s acceptance of the change of subject, and the fact that it seemed as if Elaini was going to stay with his best friend after all. “Too easily, you know? I mean, a lot of people turned against me after – ” He stopped, swallowed hard, and shrugged to indicate what he was referring to. The Flight. Frantically, he tried to regain his footing in the conversation. “But he didn’t. You’d probably have to kill someone before he’d stop believing in you. And even then he’d still think you were good, deep down.” Not even bright, sunny Atiyana was in the same league as the bronzerider in this. A strong will like hers led to stubbornness, and she was certain that some things could not be forgiven. S’peer sighed.

“So if he’s betrayed by someone, I mean personally hurt, then he doesn’t take it well. Because he put his trust in them, and they abused it.” This had happened once before – the girl W’ntyr had been seeing had slept with his friend behind W’ntyr’s back (No, not S’peer, he does have morals, you know), and W’ntyr simply hadn’t been able to forgive them. He’d never spoken to either of them again, unless he had to in a professional capacity. “Not that I’m saying Elaini would.” S’peer added hurriedly. “But she hurt him pretty badly when she left and took the twins with her. He loves her, but I’m just saying that he children are probably the reason he’s gone back to her so quickly.” The thing was, S’peer was the last person to talk to about love. He’d never fallen in love – he picked partners by looks, and how well their personalities meshed with his own. Well, more the former than the latter – some he’d never seen again, and didn’t intend to. The subject had been broached by his foster-mother, after his favourite uncle had died.

“He worried about you, you know.”
“What, so I can’t look after myself?” Typical adolescent, shrugging it off.
She had sighed. “Not that. Your feelings. He always wondered when you were going to find someone you would care about, and love, rather than just…” She was a shy woman, and S’peer had rolled his eyes at her inability to finish the sentence.
“Sounds like something he’d say.”
Her voice was a little sharper this time. “Ice, S’peer. There’s ice inside you. He knew that.” S’peer turned his back on her. “If you don’t learn to melt it, you won’t feel anything.”
“Very poetic.” He had said, but it had made him think. He’d ignored it after a while, though. So what? Ice wasn’t too bad. At least he wasn’t like W’ntyr.

A small sigh from Scarth. Unfortunately, Elizabeth, it is hardly abnormal. We should just be glad that there is no bitterness between our two. Fear can be overcome, whereas hate and resentment rarely fade.
