Throughout my adolescence if my mother felt I needed punishment she'd order me up to my bedroom to strip off and await her attention. Then she would lie me on my bed and put me back into a thick terry nappy. I had a pile of them which she kept on a shelf in my wardrobe. Next to it was a selection of five or six pairs of waterproof pants. Some of them were plain white, but there was always at least one pair that was pink or pale blue.
