A “lickin” seems a quaint, old fashioned word that could suggest a brutal strap punishment in a woodshed, but not really. A beating or a whipping does suggest something brutal. A “spanking” suggests mom’s bedroom, her sitting on a vanity with someone over her lap, or a hero spanking the heroine in an old movie. No one suggests that John Wayne “beat” Maureen O’ Hara.
