90s in middle Georgia—school paddlings were really common; not a first line punishment, but definitely a frequent consequence for repeat offenders, things like dishonesty, fighting, etc.

Student would be taken out into the hall, assistant principal could come, teacher would explain what you did, you had a chance to say your piece, then assistant principal would decide your punishment, which was usually a paddling. You stood about a foot and a half from the wall, put your hands on the wall, spread your feet past shoulder width, flattened your back, and waited. Then it was usually three to six swats, full force—extremely painful. They could technically give you up to your age in swats but it was usually three and almost never more than six. Three was enough to make anyone bawl for an hour at minimum. There was one teacher who made the paddled student stand in front of the classroom afterward for the rest of the class period so everyone could watch him or her just cry it out.

What are the most swats a student can receive in a discipline session? Do you know the thickness of the paddle used? Are swats an option to detention?

The most are 6 instead of a three day in school suspension the most giving is 4 instead of a three hour Saturday detention . The middle school paddles are 18 inches long and 3/4 an inch thick 4 inches wide. Elementary paddles are just shorter at 16 inches and high school paddles are 20 inches long all are the same width and thickness varnished lacquered and hole drilled in them . The district maintenance shop makes them . The big problem with girls no is phones in class scrolling or texting first offense is four swats or a three hour Saturday school the second is 6 swats or three days iss . Most take the spanking that’s how it is treated just a spanking with a paddle . Most kids have Saturday activities so the paddle works better or doing class work in the office is embarrassing

Thanks for sharing. I went to Texas public schools in the 60s and early 70s. 3 licks were the most they could give us back then, in my school district anyhow. There was not a standard size paddle back then. Not sure where most got their paddles but I know one coach who made his by planing down a Louieville Slugger baseball bat, so he could get a 2 handed grip. Luckily, I never felt that one.

A family I knew varied the paddle position depending on the paddle. If they used a short fly-back paddle with the ball and elastic removed, it was over the knee. The longer “cute little dear†novelty paddle had them position the kid differently.
