The paradigm case invariably cited by spanking parents of when a really good spanking was earned is crossing the street. I don't think when a child has somehow done this successfully but perhaps against some aspect of what the parent has ordered (perhaps not holding the parent's hand) that spanking is so obviously a good idea.

Much better to chill for a second and seriously inquire what was the child thinking. Your goal is not to keep the child from ever crossing streets. Your real goal, let's face it, is to teach how to do it safely. Find out whether any precautions were taken and whether they are enough. Often little kids literally can't see far enough in both directions, even though they tried to do so.

An incident of an inappropriate crossing that nonetheless turned out OK could be used positively to show the limitations of a kid's ability to SEE what is coming after trying their best to.

My point, and as Ellen D. likes to joke, I do have one, is that having to drop trou and fetch the spanking bairbrush or at my house, the current spanking yardstick, sometimes should be delayed at least long enough to find out what precautions or other procedures were employed to cross safely or to come home on time.
