Subject: Abortion

Many parents, and for good reason, restrict what there 16 year old daughter can do. For example, they may impose a curfew. They may require the daughter not to use alcohol. Should the daughter fail to meet these rules, she is likely to get punished and that punishment might be a spanking.

The parents may also require the daughter to have surgery for medical problem even if the daughter does not want it and there is a risk of death.

However, by the time a daughter is 16 she can make choices in her life. For example, she can decide what she can eat for breakfast. She can decide what color clothes to wear. The point is that while she can make some choices, there are some big choices, that could really effect her life. As such, most parents will not let their daughter drop out of school at 16. Dropping out of school at 16 could ruin the girl's life.

It seems to me that having a child at age 16 would also have a big impact on the girl's life. Suppose that we have a 16 year old girl and she had gotten pregnant. An abortion is being given serious consideration. Should the daughter or the parents decide if the girl is getting an abortion? Would it be fair for the parents to enforce their decision with spanking?

I think that's beyond the scope of this forum, but it’s also the sort of decision that is likely to lead to estrangement if the parents force their teenage daughter to have or not have an abortion against her own wishes after a serious conversation about the risks either way. Forcing a teenager to abort a wanted baby would be far worse than forcing her to finish an unwanted pregnancy. The former is unforgivable.
