Was there much talking when you got home? Or was the ritual fairly silent until it was your turn to comment on the first stroke? I was allowed to participate in a loud and somewhat panic-stricken discussion of what I was guilty of.

I would say the conversation was pretty much divided into two parts. First, my mother scolded me and explained how inappropriate and disappointing my behavior had been. At that point, it was better for me to remain silent. But I had plenty opportunity to respond when the wooden spoon told my backside the same thing shortly thereafter.

Ah yes, those conversations with spanking implements such as a spanking paddle or a nice flat wooden spoon all tend toward being one sided! (In both senses)
