 “Some parents take any explanations or rationalizations as defiance and backtalk.”... That was pretty much my father's attitude, anyway. Once the punishment was imposed, it was better to keep your mouth shut, or it would only get worse.

Yes, there is a strange tendency among many adults to often trivialize a spanking as conversation, talk or discussion. I can't completely absolve myself of this either. Probably everyone who has ever been threatened or told they would be spanked has heard similar comments.
