Because adult phone calls are often very important, even modern kids grow up being trained to take a phone call interruption very seriously. No doubt a few teen and tween calls are important but most of the time, especially during school hours, they are just inquiries as to "What's up?"

There are no easy solutions to how to compromise on this issue. Does your school have a policy on acceptable calls, perhaps from parents? Or could a student earn 6 swats from say a parental call? Btw, does anyone ever get through six without crying? Did you?

Is cell phone policy up to the individual school or is it set by a Board of Education for the whole Parrish?

What do you think of a policy of requiring phones to be off during the whole school day and stored in a student's cubby or locker? In terms of focus, this seems to work well. Emergencies can be handled by the Office staff.

How does your school schedule paddle swats? As earned and as soon as possible? Or is time set aside after school and students have to wait all day? Is there a late bus, perhaps for the athletes, that kids can take when they have a discipline appointment?
