In reply to: SJ 's message, "Possible illegality" on 09:51:43 01/10/18 Wed

I do know the UK laws on such things are very very stringent and almost impossible to "police" ... but it is not permitted to use any implements such as slippers, canes, sticks belts. A light smack with an open hand that leaves no marks or redness what so ever is all that is permitted. Anything other than that is apparently illegal. We dont live in the UK now - but im not sure what I would do.

I look at the world and see the younger generation without respect .. we are in effect failing the next generation.

They were no such rules in my day. We were punished at home and school , with parental blessing in most cases.

Girls were actually thrashed (that was the term used ) by the powers that be and in some cases severely. Red raw welted bottoms, plenty of tears but a respectful fear and dread to ensure for the most part we behaved and treat our elders with respect.

And before its said - no we were not abused, we had some of the finest teachers, and my memory's are very fond. The head was stern strict and at times punishments were severe but respected fully and I think admired. No one was punished who did not deserve it.

Today ... look at a teenager the wrong way and you could in some countrys end up in jail. Not good in my book at all!

Jan

I see a problem here:

"I look at the world and see the younger generation without respect .. we are in effect failing the next generation."

As far as I know, this was sentiment of your parents' generation as well... and their parents' generation... and their parents' generation.

Each generation worries about the next and believes them to be worse, and yet every generation turns out to be more or less the same, with some more advances made in compassion and fairness.

Neither harsh punishments nor no punishments at all can change that. U;timately, I believe that the new generation will end up as somewhat better people than us, despite all our eofforts.
