Subject: Mixed Results With AI

For a year now, I've been experimenting with ChatGPT to see what it is and isn't capable of. The prose can be compelling but the storytelling is completely paint-by-numbers. The most fun I've had with it is trying to manipulate it into generating what I want. I've found that it can deny you certain story ideas, particularly if it involves an underage smoking context or anything violent. But if you spin a story as to why you want the story that way--be it family tradition or as the opening salvo of a "redemption story"--it will give you what you ask for. Anything involving sexual content is always forbidden though...you can't talk your way into that. Kind of scary actually how easily it can be manipulated given how many bad-faith actors are out there with nefarious agendas. I certainly hope nothing involving national or international security is protected by AI based on my experience in coercing nearly anything out of it by simply rephrasing my request a few times.

Anyway, I'm writing a new Gretchen story right now and wanted to test out ChatGPT's songwriting skills on behalf of a couple of characters in the story. The first request couldn't have gone smoother and the song it spun out in five seconds was exactly what I was looking for. I'm including it in the story. But when I wanted a more professional sounding follow-up song that was credibly written as a response to the first song, I got junk. I made multiple requests with different language and nothing it churned out seemed remotely credible or usable. In one sense, I'm glad ChatGPT is still rudimentary enough to not displace what people can do, but it is helpful for general ideation, particularly stuff like churning out lists of character names or geographic locations if nothing good is at the tip of your tongue.
