The cake was baked on this long before the authors' original study came out in 2003. As early as 1992, the comprehensive EPA study on secondhand smoke came out where, after seeing that the data didn't jive with their preordained conclusion, they threw out 24 of the 30 case studies and limited the remainder of their focus on the remaining 6 case studies that backed them up. And that's what the EPA report published, holding up as the "gold standard" from which future secondhand smoke studies borrowed from even though it was thrown out by the courts.
