Christmas 1995 (SlimV) - A Review

Part One - The Author

SlimV wrote a large number of 'Dark Side' stories, many involving surprisingly young girls starting smoking and then being granted 'adult privileges' and other unsavoury concepts.(1) The one known exception to this was a story that he posted to the Dark Side Board in November of 2002 with the title 'Almost Ashamed', but which Loring republished on his site about a month later with the title it's better known as, 'Better Late Than Never'.(2) Exactly what happened after the shutdown of the old Dark Side Board is unknown, but it is known that they have been reviewing smoking fetish and transgender fiction on Amazon using the pseudonym 'Sharon Parsons' in recent years.(3)

Part Two - Christmas 1995

The short story, one of a number of tales archived by DU has an unknown publication history. The protagonist Cathy, is an 18 year old girl who was caught smoking the year previously and as Christmas approaches now has to face the fact that she's not been able to quit as she promised and one of her parents has worked this out.

Part Three - Comments

When I covered 'Better Late Than Never'(2) I'd expressed the wish that the author had written more than one story in that vein, this story is clear evidence that they did in fact do that. It's a sex free story that focuses on the fears of a young smoker as she approaches an important moment in her life.

While reading the story I was reminded of the Christmas portion of fetish author Karen Somers smoking autobiography(4) and it may have provided SlimV with inspiration, though ultimately it's only the trajectory of the story that the author uses.

The final conversation between parents and child feels believable. It suggests that a discussion similar to the one that opens 'Adult Needs'(1) took place behind the scenes. Ultimately it's a heartwarming 'smoker comes of age' story of the kind I wish the author had written more of, they clearly had the talent to do so, but chose to let their perversions run away with them.

It's also a story I'd love to have more context for, the context for 'Better Late Than Never' can be found in the Old Dark Side Board archive, but with this story, time has erased the information on why it was written, who it was written for and most puzzlingly why it was not submitted to Loring as it would have fitted well on that website.

In conclusion, this reviewer has no hesitation in recommending it.
