Daria's Smoking Apprenticeship (Smoke Diva) - A Review

Part One: The Author

The author submitted two stories to Loring in January of 1999. One dealt with embracing the habit, the other returning too it. Beyond that nothing is known about the author other than what can be gleaned from the stories themselves.

Part Two: Daria's Smoking Apprenticeship

The story first appeared on Loring's website on 01-12-1999(1), and was followed four days later by the authors second and last story.(2) It was subsequently republished in volume 9 of the Noble Leaf Library. For sixteen year old Daria, acceptance into a prestigious New York ballet company was a dream come true, the only fly in the ointment, she's over the optimum weight, not by much, but enough to put her career in jeopardy before it's even begun. Reducing her food intake is difficult, but a suggestion from one of the other members of the company offers a solution, but only if she's willing to take the risk of trying it.

Part Three: Comments

The author crafts a believable scenario, the timeline of the protagonist passing from 'experimenting' to 'devoted' is much more relaxed than in some other authors fiction taking roughly about one and a half months(3). Something else I also like about the story is not simply about the protagonist coming out as a smoker, but her professional debut as a ballerina, the reason why she took up the habit to begin with.

Recommended.

Notes:

1. Under the incorrect title 'Daria's Smoking Apprentice', which come to think of it might made a good title for a sequel, had such a story been written.
2. 'Her Old Flame'
3. By way of comparison, Patti in SSToryman's 'How Could She Say No' takes roughly two and a half weeks to make this transition.
