The typical smoker would say "There are many things that give you cancer" to defend their smoking against the risk of getting a smoking-related disease. And, ironically, that is valid.
Of all the many smokers I've know as friends, relatives, co-workers, easily over a hundred, I can only think of three that got lung cancer. One woman in her mid-forties, a co-worker in his sixties, and a cousin in her eighties. And no mway to detect exposure to asbestos, industrial chemicals, or air pollution that could also be causes.
Neither of my parents (Dad 70, Mom 77), mother-in-law (88), all heavy smokers, died of smoking-related issues. My wife's grandmothers were smokers and lived to 87 and 96.
Yet you hear of seventeen-year-old nonsmokers getting lung cancer or other nonsmoking young people getting emphysema.

Just from my own observations, the smokers pretty much lived normal lives and died of old age.
