Nobody ever said that no more smoking would mean no more lung cancer.

Smoking accounts for 70-90% of lung cancer cases. A number that’s only going to decrease as less people smoke.

There’s a reason you can predict male and female lung cancer rates by looking at male and female smoking rates a couple of decades previously.

Yes there are other causes, but that’s not news to anyone. No more smoking means a dramatic reduction in lung cancer rates 20 years later.

(Also there will be some people with exposure to second hand smoke in the never smoker data. Especially if multiple countries are involved, because while one public health body might distinguish, most won’t have checked, so you’ll get some smoking related lung cancer in the non smokers too, muddying the data. And weed smokers might not consider themselves smokers in this context, but it’s the same risk if they are inhaling smoke).
