"Police have issued a stern warning to retailers selling illegal tobacco, vowing to "target anyone, at any level," after detectives seized around 18,700 cigarettes worth over $40,000, along with $100,000 in cash, from several private properties.

In a joint operation between the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and Victoria Police, officers targeted several homes and one retail store across Melbourne last week, which they allege were in possession of illegally imported or manufactured cigarettes.

Search warrants were carried out at two homes in Altona North and a retail store in Hoppers Crossing, allegedly returning almost 19,000 individual cigarettes, five kilograms of loose-leaf illicit tobacco, $100,000 in cash and "numerous devices" believed to be used in "facilitating the illicit tobacco trade"."
