Subject: My Top-10 Days Of Fairgrounds Sightings Of All-Time
For the last quarter century, I've been navigating Midwestern fairgrounds in pursuit of sightings of attractive young women and girls smoking. These pilgrimages haven't been as successful or satisfying in recent years with the dramatic decline in smoking, but hot damn have I had some incredible days seeing some incredible things.
I've singled out my 10 favorite days--along with five days that get honorable mentions--and compiled a list describing why these days are so special for me. I'm including a link to a "featured sighting" from each day, in some cases the marquee sighting of the day and in some cases a sighting that was highly eventful but perhaps hasn't had a high enough profile in the years since. #10. 2021 Missouri State Fair (August 21, 2021)
I expect this to go down as my last great day of fairgrounds fetishing. Numberswise, it didn't hit the soaring highs that I took for granted just a handful of years earlier, but sightings were abundant, crossed multiple demographic profiles, played out over a satisfying timeline in the daytime and evening hours and particularly in the orbit of the Hank Williams Jr. concert, and included a single epic sighting (the Newport power couple with the girl in white shorts) who defined the day and night. It's astonishing that I had a day of sightings like this in the 2020s.

#9. 2013 Minnesota State Fair, Day 1 (August 24, 2013)
This one is special because, even with all the signs pointed toward disaster, the smoker girls still delivered. This was the first year the Minnesota State Fair imposed "designated smoking areas" only months after a massive cigarette tax increase and just as the vaping trend really began catching on. I was scared to death things would go off a cliff. Instead I had a great day that morphed into a great night, with pretty girls ignoring the smoking restrictions with regularity and a couple of "sensory overload" moments where I was seeing duos and trios of smoker girls with nearly every footstep taken.

#8. 2012 Local County Fair, Thursday Night (August 2, 2012)
The virtues of fetishing at my hometown county fair were never more clearly spelled out than on the night featuring the grandstand concert by country duo Thompson Square. I got follow-up sightings from three separate high school hotties I'd seen smoking two nights earlier. And I had my catbird seat in the grandstand overlooking the smoking area when pretty girls would step out for a smoke before, during, and after the concert, giving me intriguing storylines on top of quality visuals and I had a perfect excuse and position to just watch it all play out. All of these same ingredients still exist at my county fair.....except all of the smokers went away.

#7. 2015 Minnesota State Fair, Day 1 (August 29, 2015)
It blows me away how long the Minnesota State Fair held up as my most reliable venue despite the state's antismoking reputation. This day was a fantastic reminder, with an afternoon that was absolutely off the chain, giving me one incredible sighting after another. It seemed like I never went more than a half hour without seeing something deeply satisfying that afternoon and early evening, capstoned with blond teen cutie "Sophie" outside the dairy building. Evening grandstand act Carrie Underwood probably helped in bringing out what was agreeable demographics from young smokers at the time.

#6. 2006 Minnesota State Fair (August 26, 2006)
This was arguably my first "modern" day of fetishing at the Minnesota State Fair. I'd been spending my days with sightings exclusively on my mind here since 2001, but before 2006, I always reconnected with my parents for evening concerts by 7 p.m. The era of evening concerts had by now come to an end, so I finally had the freedom to sample the evening crowd at the Minnesota State Fair unimpeded. And it was richly rewarding as, back then, evenings at the Minnesota State Fair continued to be a time when you'd miss 10 sightings if you blinked. And it didn't hurt at all that a very productive daytime fed into the evening shift this year.

#5. 2018 Missouri State Fair (August 18, 2018)
I'd always had a gut feeling that Sedalia, Missouri, was the right place for a great day of sightings but it wasn't until my third visit that I found myself there at the right time for it. It got off to a somewhat slow start but I had a recurring source of quality daytime sightings from a duo of hot blonds....and then the crowd for the Cole Swindell grandstand concert showed up and the party really got started. This day would have been iconic even without the evening detour from the wholesome lookalike of Lucy Camden from TV's "7th Heaven" reimagined as a shameless, heavy-smoking Marlboro Reds teen, but when she burst on to the scene at 9:30, it was a volcanic eruption of raw adrenaline unlike anything I've experienced on a fairgrounds in the seven years since. A great day became an iconic day.

#4. 2010 Local County Fair (August 7, 2010)
My friend Dan, the only buddy from outside of the fetish community who I told about my fair sightings adventures, decided to join me for the evening at my county fair and see what the fuss was all about. As someone without a fetish, he didn't get it, but damn if me and the girls from our home county didn't do our best to show him what they were made of. The evening grandstand concert was the rock band Hinder at the height of their popularity so there was a very demographically friendly crowd, helping us to identify cute young smoker hotties roaming the grounds before the concert, but it was after we took my favorite spot in the grandstand that even Dan had to admit it was like shooting fish in a barrel. The band showed up helpfully late and the girls were craving their nicotine. At one point that smoking area had nearly a dozen gorgeous girls out there at the same time and I had nothing to do that just watch over them. It was the most productive single night ever at my county fair with 52 sightings in one night.

#3. 2010 Iowa State Fair, Day 1 (August 14, 2010)
Not sure what it was about 2010 generally but even amidst a sweeping regional smoking ban enactment, newly imposed FDA regulation of tobacco, and a national cigarette tax hike, the smoking scene in the Midwestern fairs had never been more vibrant. I remember my disbelief as I perused my first state fair of the season and found so many different types of girls unashamedly wielding cigarettes with a combination of defiance or obliviousness to the antismoking tidal wave surrounding them. The daytime hours were spectacular but things really came alive in the evening during and after the free stage concert by country singer Whitney Duncan. Absolutely electric night where I never went more than 15 minutes without a really good sighting and I walked away with a half dozen classics.

#2. 2014 Iowa State Fair, Day 1 (August 9, 2014)
I'd had two years in a row where the Iowa State Fair lagged the others. Three of my four visits in 2012 and 2013 were notable disappointments, and I was prepared to put the Iowa State Fair in a downwardly mobile tier heading into 2014 until I had a day that blew away my wildest expectations. My daytime sightings were better in both quantity and quality than preceding years and I'd already conceded by mid-afternoon it was shaping up to be a solid day....and that was before the sun went down and the floodgates blew wide open. Specifically, it was before the wholesome and petite 17ish blond cutie shook me to my core by smoking nine Marlboro Reds in two hours, absolutely dominating the latter part of the evening and putting an exclamation point of adrenaline on a day that generated the most sightings I've ever gotten in a single day at the Iowa State Fair.

It's hard to fully put into words what made this day so special but it was like a snowball that started at the top of the mountain, built momentum as the day went along, and then blossomed into a full-blown avalanche in the evening. It was just a memorable cast of characters at every juncture, with one sighting after another standing out for its iconic smoking females, be it solo smokers in unusual family settings or with unforgettable or aggressive styles, dynamic duos of unlikely teen girls and young adults, bold and memorable wardrobe selections, and all topped off with the young brunette in the pink top and tight jeans lighting up one cigar after another in the evening. The smoker girls that year just never took their foot off the gas even for a minute and I can't imagine a scenario where it could ever topped for its intense and relentless rewards.

Honorable Mentions...
2005 Local County Fair, Friday Night (August 5, 2005)
This was the night of the legendary Dierks Bentley concert that introduced me to the 14-year-old cowgirl smoking in open defiance of the lady I assumed was her grandmother before taking her to the midway for a much more age-appropriate pastime, all with a stunned audience who could only nervously laugh as the scene played out. Afterward, one of the most gorgeous knockout blonds in the history of my fair had her second appearance that week, smoking a cigarette beautifully on both occasions that I saw her. These were two of my three best county fair sightings of all-time and they happened on the same night. It was the first truly great night of sightings I'd ever gotten at my county fair, and it put the place on the map in the top tier of my sightings venues for several years to come.

2011 Iowa State Fair, Day 2 (August 17, 2011)
Wednesday nights at the Iowa State Fair have been hit or miss over the nearly two decades I've been making mid-week visits after work, but they scored a free stage coup in 2011 when they got country-pop crossover The Band Perry signed on for a concert that drew in a huge and demographically friendly concert that night. Smoking still had a huge cultural footprint in 2011 and the girls delivered big-time. When the concert got out at 9:30, I remember walking a single block and getting 10 sightings of young hotties wielding after-show cigarettes. When the evening ended with the best cigar sighting of my life, it ensured that night would make my Hall of Fame.

2015 Missouri State Fair (August 22, 2015)
I never know quite how to categorize my maiden voyage to Sedalia, Missouri. At least in terms of sheer numbers, the venue disappointed a bit and there wasn't a lot going on at various points in the day. But the one big thing that was going on was the trio of sexpot early 20s babes who gave me my "12-hour sighting" that began shortly after noon and continued until midnight, punctuating key moments at every stage of the day with highly memorable and outrageously delicious content. There didn't need to be much else going on at the Missouri State Fair that day because this trio monopolized the entire day for themselves and birthed a new legendary venue on my fair season rolodex.

2017 Minnesota State Fair, Day 1 (August 27, 2017)
When the planned Saturday trip to the Minnesota State Fair in 2017 had to be delayed until Sunday because of heavy rain, I was concerned that it wouldn't be the same. Instead, I managed to resurrect a lackluster fair season with one of the last truly excellent days at the Minnesota State Fair. The sightings were frequent and robust at every interval of the day and even though we were five years into the vaping revolution, there were few signs of disruption. It was amazing how the Minnesota State Fair of 2017 still largely resembled the state fair of a decade and a half earlier with no pending icebergs in sight. It wouldn't be long until things took a rapid and dark turn at this venue, but when I was seeing, among so many other things, my towering blond beauty smoking five cigarettes throughout the day amidst an all-male friends' group, the "end of smoking" was the furthest thing from my mind.

2019 Iowa State Fair, Day 1 (August 10, 2019)
The famous Slipknot concert day where the Iowa State Fair literally delivered like it was 1999. The crowd was demographically friendly but it's just astonishing to remind myself I got 130 sightings that day right in the heart of the Juul era. There was no reason to believe that cigarettes and vaping weren't poised to coexist harmoniously in August 2019 or that things were poised to go so wrong so quickly just a couple of years later. The marquee moment of this day was the 13-year-old blond smoking twice with her mom before going into the grandstand for the concert. To this day, Slipknot remains my favorite band of all time....even though I hate their music!
