A posting from an incompletely archived thread from CigReviews containing a family story which could easily be repurposed as a characters background. The original poster used the nym 'fumadan'. I've taken the liberty of editing the spelling and formating to make it easier to read.
"Both my wife and I are smokers, we have three children, two boys and a girl and all three started smoking in their teens. Rob is 19, Mike and Jenny are 17.
Mike was the first one to start smoking, I caught him when he was 14. Of course I had "the talk" with him but being a child of smoking parents he didn't see anything wrong with picking up the habit himself. As a teen smoker myself I knew that nothing I would say would make him quit so I we let him smoke openly at home and even bought him his cigarettes.
It wasn't long after we let Mike smoke that Rob started and soon openly smoked at home. Jenny only started smoking recently, when her current boyfriend started smoking I knew she would follow in his footsteps sooner or later.
As responsible parents we wouldn't have minded if they hadn't started smoking but with the two of us smokers we sort of expected them to start smoking."
