With the closure of 2025, it is time once again for the annual Female Smoking in Video Game awards!
As smoking becomes more shunned in the mainstream, it ironically increases in power as a literary device, such as to establish a character's rebellious attitude, to create a retro tone, or as a counter-culture symbol. I feel this year's winners illustrate this effect well. We will see what the future brings!
2025 Awards

Dispatch
Dispatch is noteworthy for containing several lengthy and high-quality animated scenes featuring smoking from Invisigal, the "Hot Topic" member of the superhero group. In addition to the eye candy, there is a bit of on-topic dialog regarding her smoking, and the fact that she smokes despite it having been established that she has asthma. Perhaps more noteworthy, however, is that such prominent smoking could be shown in a mainstream title, albeit from an indie developer, that appeared even on the Nintendo Switch.
FSVG 2025 winner:
Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer
While it may be disappointing that the 1998 version of the titular detective has kicked her 1995 smoking habit, the game is far from without smoking content. Kathy herself takes many opportunities to bemoan her new clean lifestyle (though there are hints she has replaced smoking with a coke habit), stating at several points that she doesn't want to give in to temptation or "waste her precious relapse" when smokables are available. In addition, there is an extended puzzle sequence involving recreating a discontinued brand of cigarettes but mixing tobacco with various flavorings and even recreating the look of the pack. Although actual instances of smoking are relatively few, the game is infused with smoking references and aesthetic, earning it the 2025 award alongside its predecessor.
