Subject: Female Smoking in Video Games 2025

It's been a while, but finally there are some more updates to the Female Smoking in Video Games guide. One of the entries is even a community contribution, which I am always happy to see; I certainly can't play them all!

The Fixer

Subverse
"One that got away" due to no female tobacco smoking

Created by adult animation group Studio FOW, Subverse combines Visual Novel gameplay with Turn-based Tactic and Shoot-em-up minigames as you acquire a harem of sexy waifus.

One of the girls, Lily, seems to have originally been planned to be a smoker. Several pieces of pre-release concept are show her holding a kiseru pipe or a cigarette in a holder. Some 3D animations in the game also show her holding her hand in a suggestive way that looks like she ought to have a cigarette between her fingers, and one of her preferred gifts is an "Antiquated Solar Lighter" (a Zippo). Despite all this, neither she nor anyone else in the game is depicted smoking or described as using tobacco. It would seem that the decision to kick her nicotine habit came fairly late in the development process, after the animations had already been completed.

Several characters in the game do use bongs and 420 at various points, but this all happens off-screen. Frequent heave alcohol use and drunkenness occurs on-screen, though.

Kathy Rain 2: Soothsayer

Our heavy-smoking 90s girl Kathy from the first game has grown up, and kicked her Corley Cinders habit. While this may come as a disappointment, the game still features no shortage of smoking-related content. Kathy herself has some nice dialogue, like commenting that she "wouldn't waste her precious relapse" on a low-quality brand of cigarettes she finds in a vending machine, or mentioning that she doesn't want to give in to temptation if you try to use her lighter on cigars or cigarettes you find.

The real star though is Kathy's crazy mother. Not only does she smoke, but the game features an extended puzzle in which Kathy has to recreate her mother's discontinued favorite brand of cigarette. This involves researching the aromas and flavors of the brand, then gathering various herbs to doctor the tobacco of a cheaper brand, and even recreating the appearance of the pack.
