"Despite smoking rates falling to their lowest level since peak use in the 1960s and 70s, concerns are growing about the risk of a resurgence as tobacco giants target younger generations through social media.

According to figures from the Australian National University, 24,000 Australians die from smoking-related causes every year and experts warn that the nation now risks becoming complacent.

Melbourne University professor Michelle Jongenelis works in education and research, and focuses on health-related behaviours, including tobacco control.

She said there should be a return of the mass anti-smoking campaigns of the past as nicotine products were repackaged in the form of vapes, nicotine pouches and cigarettes and promoted to gen Z."
