I did boot around the idea of having some form of monetization on the library over the years. But it never would have been to gain access to the content, that's always been free, and as long as I'm still doing this, it will always be free.

The idea never went over well.

I would never have charged for access. If I had of gone ahead, it would have been for donations. So I could afford some decent TTS software to produce audio books, or pay someone to narrate a story for the library, or pay an illustrator to turn a story into a comic.

It's always cost me to do this work, electricity used, printer ink and paper if I made a hard copy of anything, but I was prepared to eat that. As I was building the Library, up until it's pre-plandemic drop-off, I was working the equivalent of a full-time job, often with overtime, unpaid. Bloody hell, if I had of been pulling a wage, the library content would have doubled in size, and the NLL web site might exist. Just not on the surface web, I wouldn't want a shit magnet. (self-hosting FTW!)

Never met Loring, may have exchanged messages with him back in the day on some forum or other, can't remember, but he will always have my respect, he built something great, something which is still there. Me, I chose to pick up where Loring left off. The library has more than doubled in size as a result. Pretty cool.

One thing Loring never did, was charge for the content, and the thought never even crossed my mind.

If Which-Tough wants the crown, he's welcome to it, but if he's going to charge for access, he'd bloody well better pay the Human authors, otherwise, he loses the right. He's charging people money to read something produced for free.

I don't see the site lasting, honestly. And AI slop aside, it'll be a shame, Human-authored stories will be lost when it goes away.

If there's any Human author that has posted a story to that site, pop up and say Hi, the Noble Leaf Library could use your content, it will be preserved for posterity. Web sites don't last forever. Which-Tough is pay-walling your work, and that ain't right.

I have nothing against Which-Tough, I just don't agree with what he's done, or how he's gone about it. And if he's going to host AI-generated content, at least label is as such.

If he wants to monetize the site, fine, but it's wrong to charge for access for something created for free. And if you're going to profit from someone else's work, at least do the right thing and pay them for it. Otherwise it's theft.

Theft is wrong.

I stand with Human authors.

Nick
