Just one update this time, but I'm putting it in its own post since it's a relatively long one.

Encased

Encased: A Sci-Fi Post-Apocalyptic RPG is an isometric, turn-based RPG set in an alternate version of the 1970s. Smoking is pervasive in the game world, with many characters, both male and female, smoking a variety of cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Acts of smoking are often described at length in the game’s text, and effects of smoking (such as coughing or needing a cigarette) will sometimes directly affect events in the game.

Cigarettes are a usable item in the game, which can be purchased from vending machines as well as found or traded for. Smoking a cigarette causes a small amount of health damage, but provides a 30-minute buff to Perception and Charisma. This is followed by a 60-minute debuff to Psyche, though this can be replaced by the original buff by smoking another cigarette…

Given the ubiquity of smoking in this game, I have to believe that its inclusion was an explicit design choice. This could have been intended as a reference to the 1970s setting, or to the Soviet era of the sci-fi novel Roadside Picnic, which was reportedly an inspiration for the game.
