Subject: Finally! I get to test the Library on something.

So I got my hands on an iRiver Story HD (don't laugh too hard), it was a find at a recycling centre. I'm going to pop the Library onto an SD card, and see what happens.

It was a coin toss as to whether the thing would work, but yeah, it powers on and the battery holds a charge.

It's apparently PDF-compatible, ePub and whatnot…

(Time Passes)

(sigh) It's not great, but it's not awful.

All the PDFs load, I'm assuming the ePubs will, not going to bother checking.

All the text is readable as-is, but I had to use the zoom function to improve it. However the A5 versions I did of Nurse Regina and NSC Volume 01 are easily readable, I might have to do more of those. Hey, there's a post-retirement thing I can do!

Images display fairly well, despite being in greyscale.

The blank pages in the files threw me at first, I thought the device had shut down, but no, all good.

I do have a couple of niggles though…

this eReader displays the page titles with my internal naming system, bit of a pain, but I can live with it, I mean, it works, so I'm happy with that.

The biggest pain in the arse however, is coming from a Mac, the device also lists all of the Spotlight index files, so the file count in the list is effectively doubled. It's something else I've discovered on other devices like MP3 players. So if I want to open a document, I have to go to the end of the list and work backwards.

Apparently while researhing, the thing can also read MP3 and MP4 files, but I never saw them, same with the CSV files, I just dumped everything to the SD card.

As things are, file bloat aside, it would have been better if I had of copied things over within folders, lesson learned there.

I did try the zoom option, and it works well enough. The device has a reflow option which makes everything really readable, but throws the formatting out, plus it uses a default font, ick.

Also, the thing is Google-enabled, but I was unable to sign into my Google account. The thing does display web pages after a fashion apparently, I was hoping to try it out, oh well, not fussed.

But it works.

The device itself is really light, which I think is great. So if I ever had to travel, I would probably use this over an iPhone or iPad, despite the lack of colour for the images.

I'm actually quite pleased, I picked up a Kindle from the same place I got the iRiver a few months earlier, but the thing won't power up. Otherwise I would have tested the library on that. It did come in a nice faux-leather case though, I'm going to swap them over.

I'm going to sit and reorganize everything into folders, which should make navigation easier. Those damn spotlight files though.

Nick
