Subject: Swing Speed Experiment

I posted this on the SA message board, but it hasn't show up yet.

I just got my Belco Swing Meter in today, so I did some experiments. I wanted to see which type of swing allows me to generate the most clubhead speed. It would also help me settle the debate about which generates the power in a golf swing - the lower body vs. arms.

Here are my results:

CG Swing (straight left arm, big shoulder turn, hip turn, leg drive, etc.) -- fastest speed at 108 mph, but was unable to get it that fast again. Best speeds stayed at 101 - 104, with 101 being the most consistent reading.

CG Swing (bent left arm) -- 96 mph.

LPG Swing -- 102-103 mph, though I wasn't able to get it over 96 mph until my third round of experiments.

LPG Swing (sitting down on a stool) - 96 mph.

My conclusions: without a doubt, the arms and hands contribute the most power to a golf swing. Even if I eliminate the lower body entirely (by sitting on a stool), I can generate decent clubhead speed - 96 mph. I could probably do better with practice. I saw Jack K. swing at 113 mph while sitting.

I have emailed my results to Jack K. I want to hear his input on my results. I think I read on his site that the LPG swing should give you about 10% more power, which so far, is not the case with me. But that may change. For 20 years, I've had a CG style swing, and for only 2 weeks I've had a LPG swing. It's possible that my speeds will continue to increase with this method as my muscles and brain adapt to it. Hell, Jack is 61 and swings at about 120 mph or so, so I imagine I have the potential to get faster than him. I'm only 32 years old, a foot taller, and 50 lbs. heavier than the guy.

Oh, and one more thing. I have a slight muscle pull in my upper back, so my speeds are probably a little slower than they should be. I'd redo the experiments periodically and see what happens.

Has anybody else done experiments such as this with a Swing Meter?
