Tray position is tricky business. If you look at question #76 in the Scott H. archives, he would even deny the necessity of the tray position.

The whole issue of the tray is determined by the proper, mostly right hand, grip. Let me say this differently. If you want to swing like Moe you have to grip like Moe to establish the top position, in tray mode. Most of the single axis developers wanted to convert the Moe swing to an "on-plane" kind of swing, and they developed their own grip. These swings are not mutually exclusive, but the developers swings are not necessarily "tray" oriented.

This is another one of those confusing issues that are created when you say that Moe was the first NGer.
