Subject: Hey, a golf discussion

Liam: You hit this right on the head. Jack K. did modify the swing, but he kept the mechanics right. However, NG bastardized the mechanics. Let me say this a better way. NG allowed the mechanics to be bastardized.

I think a lot of people try to learn the swing the way I did, and that is to get the NG tape and, then, look at Moe swing, like on the Journeyman tape. After a couple of months of that you start to say to NG, "Hey, that's not the way Moe does that. Moe has different mechanics!"

The big issue with Moe's swing is that it is absolutely perfect. If you break the integration, if you break the perfection, then, why on earth do you want to swing like Moe? That's the whole purpose of it. Without the integration, single axis is no worse, or, no better, than any other swing.

That's the healthy discussion. If I change certain characteristics of the swing, do I fundamentally change the swing. For example, let me tell you that if you raise your hands over your head, you do, fundmanetally, change the nature of the swing, because you have to "pull", in order to get your shoulders level. Moe keeps his shoulders relatively level. Another example, if you take the club straight back, you establish a plane which does not allow the hands to get behind the ears. Have you fundamentally changed the swing? You bet. Lastly, if you properly take the club inside, as Moe does, can you "pull" the club out of that position. No way. So, if you are talking about "pulling" the club you are fundamentally in error. Moe holds the left arm as rod, and takes the top position right back down to the preimpact position by merely changing body position, and, then, releases the right side. Instructors that teach pulling always take the club back on line, and, then, pull it out of that position. Is that the way Moe does it? No, it is not (however, it could be, but not the way they explain it).

That's why these issues, for students, requires a healthy explanation. It's like Shankland explaining Moe's swing on the Golf Channel. He got the idea right about throwing the club across the room, but got the idea completely wrong, the complete antithesis of Moe, when he explained that you should keep the right shoulder back by looking backwards into an imaginary mirror.

The list goes on.
