This forum established after an incident of witch hunts and tracing attempts was observed to occur against students who spoke out on a topic others wanted silenced, on another forum. Our site is dedicated to those students.

A wonderful idea destroyed by stupidity and arrogance:

Dispela emi liklik toksave long niupela PNG sumatin orgenisesin Kumul Scholars International, na toksave long traipela KSI Convensen (bung) bai kamap long Brisbane long July long olgeta ol PNG sumatin stap long Australia.
Na tu emi singaut long wanem ol sumatin inap long presentim ol pepa long Convensen.

Kumul Scholars International
The Kumul Scholars International concept was established as a result of a general resolution at the inaugural PNG Independence Convention, held in Brisbane in 1997.

It was felt that an organisation was needed to represent the interests of PNG nationals studying abroad.

The objectives of KSI are:
· - to promote the marketability of PNG nationals studying abroad to potential employers in PNG.
· - to promote PNG identity among PNG nationals studying abroad.
· - to promote awareness, and to disseminate information among the KSI members with regards to developmental issues relevant to PNG.

Anthony Smare is the foundation President, having been appointed at the general forum held at the Independence Convention ‘97, and will be responsible for the establishment of KSI.

It is intended that the KSI will represent all PNG nationals studying abroad. The name “Kumul Scholars” was chosen to acknowledge the fact that PNG nationals studying at tertiary institutions overseas comprise undergraduate students and postgraduate students, working to attain further knowledge and skills to help their country advance further.

The first two student associations to join the KSI are the Kumul Students Society of QUT and the ACT Kumuland Students Association. It is hoped that all PNG students associations around the world (outside PNG) will be affiliated and that all PNG nationals studying overseas but not a member of any organisation affiliated to KSI will become affiliated to KSI.

The KSI represents an important initiative with the object of enhancing PNG’s human resources development by promoting awareness among its members of issues relevant to PNG, promoting greater consciousness among the members of their role in PNG’s development, and in ensuring that employers in PNG are fully aware of the skills and qualifications of returning students.

The first general meeting of KSI is proposed to be held at the Kumul Scholars International Convention ‘98, at which the constitution, structure, and objects of KSI will be discussed, amended and endorsed by general resolution.

Kumul Scholars International Convention ’98
Date: 14th - 17th July 1998
Venue: Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Queensland
Convention Theme: “Papa Graun; Pikinini Kumul: Addressing the Social Concerns of PNG Today.”

The First Convention
The Convention is the second of its kind, following up on the outstandingly successful Inaugural PNG Independence Convention ‘97. The inaugural PNGIC’97 represented a bold initiative of the PNG students in Australia to organise an event where developmental issues of great importance and relevance to PNG could be discussed in a meaningful way, with the intention that discussion would lead to proactive action in addressing those problems by the delegates present.

Despite teething problems the first Convention was a success, with PNG students from all around Australia attending.

The KSI Convention ‘98 represents an attempt to build upon the success of the first Convention so as to create a continuing tradition of PNG student Conventions and continuing furtherance of the Convention objects.

The Convention’s Objects?
The Convention concept is staunchly non-political and its objectives are:

1. Awareness: to raise awareness of PNG students with respect to developmental issues affecting PNG.
2. Empowerment: to raise the consciousness of the delegates in relation to their role in PNG’s development.

What is involved?
The Convention will revolve around a seminar environment involving the presentation of papers by post graduate students on a topic related to the theme of the Convention. The student papers will be complemented by Special Guest presentations by prominent Papua New Guineans who are invited to participate in the Convention because of their advocacy in areas related to the theme.

The convention will culminate with the Kumul Ball, to be held at an inner city Brisbane location on evening of Friday 17th July 1998.

Who is attending?
The first Convention drew delegates from universities in the ACT, New South Wales and Queensland, and featured excellent papers by student presenters. These papers were complemented by notable Special Guest presentations from Sir Mekere Morauta, Mr Peter Donigi, Mr Charles Lepani and the patron of the KSI, Dr Tony Deklin.

The success of the first convention emanated from the high quality of papers presented and the camaraderie forged by all those involved.

This year, the KSIC has confirmed the attendance of Mr Peter Barter, former Madang governor and successful businessman as a Special Guest. Other guests will be announced shortly.

These students are involved not out of any personal agenda but on the basis of their desire to give something back to their country. The convention is non-profit and relies on the support of PNG based institutions for its operation.

To all those students, particularly in Brisbane who would like to help out in the organisation, operation or merely participate in this year’s Convention, don’t hesitate to contact any member of the KSI Organisation Committee. Your assistance would be extremely invaluable not only in terms of the success of the Convention but from our nation’s point of view as well.

We look encourage and look forward to your assistance
