Party pressure sees Auali back as privatisation minister
PM’s backflip
PRIME Minister Sir Mekere Morauta will reinstate demoted minister Vincent Auali as Privatisation and Corporatisation Minister.
Political sources have told the Post-Courier that PDM heavies, including party founder and former prime minister Paias Wingti, were surprised by Mr Auali’s sacking as Privatisation and Corporatisation Minister last Thursday. He was demoted to State Minister.
Sources close to the Prime Minister said last night that a request was made to Sir Mekere to reconsider his decision on Mr Auali.
The sources said the Prime Minister had reconsidered and agreed to reinstate Mr Auali.
One source said an urgent meeting was convened within 24 hours of Mr Auali’s sacking at which Sir Mekere was told “in no uncertain terms” to reinstate Mr Auali to his old job.
The general consensus at the Friday meeting was that Mr Auali as a senior member of the PDM and considered a future candidate for party leadership should not have been treated in the belittling manner he was last Thursday.
Sources said the general agreement had left Sir Mekere in a dilemma. As prime minister he has the prerogative to hire and fire members of his cabinet and has to be seen to be decisive, however, as leader of a political party, his decisions are also dictated to by its whims and wishes.
Many PDM members have confirmed that last Wednesday’s parliamentary caucus meeting did not discuss the sacking of any minister, least of all any from among its ranks.
The next day Sir Mekere announced the demotion of Auali and Provincial Affairs Minister Andrew Kumbakor and the sacking of Petroleum and Energy Minister Tommy Tomscoll, all PDM members, as well as the sacking of Chris Haiveta (Labor and Employment) and Daniel Kapi (Corrective Institution Services).
According to sources, while the sackings and demotions last week were done to avoid political instability, Sir Mekere had left many in suspense when he failed to provide explanations and details as to what each of those ministers had done to create that instability he was so concerned about.
Sources have also speculated that the decision to penalise Mr Auali was taken without the consent of the full PDM caucus but by a few self-interested politicians who manipulated the prime minister’s decision to protect themselves.
It is understood that Mr Auali, in his capacity as minister responsible for privatisation, had reports on several government statutory bodies which heavily implicated certain ministers in the current government.
He was urged to shelve these reports in order not to destabilise the Government if these reports became public and damaged these politicians, “hence the real reason for the instability argument”, the source said.
Other reports of investigations into government departments, statutory bodies and a particular industry which are “still floating around” would cause serious embarrassment to the government and affect its credibility in a big way, the source said.
