You still don't get it do you? I have read the previous postings on the other board, and the lack of civility is deplorable. But by adopting the same derogatory classifications as the Americans (who were no saints in the lack of civility department on the last board), you were adopting all their connotations which was the prime motivator for their adoption of that derogatory term, and the manifestation of their contempt from traditional Melanesians. Your adoption (whether accidental or deliberate) of those terms and classifications reveal the biases in your conceptual framework; a conclusion which is further reinforced when one considers how defensively you are reacting to these interrogatories.

If lack of civility is the prerequisite for the branding of a person as a "kanaka" then those Americans are 'kanakas' just the same as the PNGean(s) involved in the fraca, just the same as a lout on the streets of Sydney's Kingscross or a homeboy on a street corner of Los Angeles' Crenshaw.

But then, it all comes back to why you are eschewing the derogatory view of traditional Melanesians as "kanakas"?

It is a honest question. All you need to do is state whether you are proud of your Melanesian ancestry or not? Whether you believe your Melanesian people are "kanaka's" or not (bearing in the mind that the vast majority of Melanesians are among the most 'civil' people on earth).

I think it would be easiest and wises just distancing yourself from the term "kanaka".

What do you say?
