Gangsters vow to give up bad old habits for new life
THE turn of this century saw many vowing to give up from their old and bad habits while others were headed for new directions.
Fighters and wanted criminals in the Wahgi Valley of the Western Highlands Province were no different as many were giving up their evil habits before year 2000.
The gang members and leaders of Jiwaka 106 Revolutionary surrendered themselves to police and the community last week.
In a ceremony at Minj government station, the gangsters apologised to police, community leaders and the government for what they had done in the past.
The occasion, witnessed by Highlands police commander Mathew Minok, provincial police commander Allan Kundi, Minj police station commander Michael Kapal, South Waghi district manager David Wamia, pastors, community leaders and others, was remarkable.
"We are all finished from the criminal and unlawful activities we had practised along the Okuk Highway, to business houses and the people," group leader David Tumun said.
"God, the Almighty, through his only son Christ Jesus, has changed our lives and we want to be free totally from oppression and criminal activities.
"For the last 15 years we were actively involved in stealing, robbing people, blocking the highway, raping women, we had no freedom nor enjoyed our lives.
"Our needs and wants were not satisfied by what we did and we are thinking it is about time we gave up from our evil ways," he said.
Mr Tumun said the society hated them. "We would now like to reassure police, the community and the government that we will never turn back to our old criminal habits."
He said most of the gang members, from north and south Wahgi, were grade six leavers and were making their living through criminal activities.
The gangsters gave up their criminal activities after giving their lives to Jesus in a combined crusade in Minj last week.
Another group also turned away from their bad habits at the same crusade.
Mr Minok said the Holy Spirit of God could be relied on and moves such as these would happen throughout the province and the world.
The police chief said if the gangs were giving up their criminal habits they must do it completely and for good.
