On the face of it, I think it looks more like a contradition to the thesis for this reason:

The landless city types (many of our town people would have a difficult time going to the village and claiming land now, especially those who didn't pay their social dues, ie supporting wantoks when they lived in the cities). For that reason they should be the hard workers at least according to the thesis. City people tend to be that way the world over.

But I would say that the rural culture remains, even in the cities and that there is no contradiction. The culture has not changed to fit prevailing conditions of the towns and cities. There is always an idea in the back of one's head that one can go back to the village if necessary, at least for the population majority.

Would be interested to see if the 3rd or 4th generation Moresbites who originally came from far away are harder working than those who can still easily go back to the village!
