Subject: 1 small addition - planning ahead DID exist in PNG!
In reply to: 's message, "The Problem With PNG Part II" on 15:00:52 01/16/00 Sun

There is this stereotyped system that in tropical places like PNG, people don't have to plan ahead, i.e. that the 4 seasons didn't force them to.

That seems to be true on the surface. But look underneath and I think you'll find that this is wrong.

The most obvious thing I can think of is the planning of marriage relationships in Milne Bay Province. Traditionally, and in at least some areas, I'm told that marriages were arranged GENERATIONS in advance. Careful attention was paid to cementing or renewing clan connections through marriage.

Why this planning ahead? Because THAT planning was very important to the long-term survival of the community.

The lesson here (I think) is that every society plans ahead on matters that affect the survival and health of the community. In cold climates, people have to plan ahead for winter. In Milne Bay, people had to plan ahead to insure interclan harmony. There must be other examples.

Just shows that really, there's no difference between PNG mind and mind from other cultures. SO WHY ARE WE SO BLADI HANDOUT DEPENDENT THESE DAYS?????
