Subject: Terriers Tops Again
Boston U. won its second straight America East Commissioner's Cup this season, recognizing the conference's best overall athletic program. All the forum bickering and my-dog-is-bigger-than-your-dog trash talking comes to a point when we realize who had the best overall results when compared to the others. Congrats to all of the Terrier student-athletes!

Despite its basketball woes, UNH finished second overall.

Once again, "well-rounded" Binghamton finished last. Way to go Bearcats.

So which fine AE school has the privilege of claiming you in the ranks of its esteemed graduates, Animal? If you're gonna be so quick to dish it out against Bing, the rest of us ought to have the chance to dish it right back again. And while we're at it, how about coming clean -- did you get rejected from Bing way back when or were you smart enough to realize that you didn't have a chance in hell of getting in?

Re: Terriers Tops Again -- NU Hoop Fan, 15:17:32 05/27/03 Tue
14 sports (fewest in AE), 6 titles (most in AE), third place in the CC Standings. If I'm NU, I'll take it any day.

Big deal..... -- mainejeff, 15:33:43 05/27/03 Tue
Maine doesn't even sponsor 5 sports that AE counts, so the Black Bears will never win this anyway (neither will Hartford or Northeastern). Boston U. has a great women's program, but when a school doesn't sponsor football, baseball, or men's lacrosse, it's hard to take their overall program seriously.
P.S. - Can we count football or ice hockey?

Make up your mind mainejeff. You bitch that all anyone is talking about is basketball, so the Commish's Cup comes up, something for all sports, and you piss and moan that "Oh, Maine will never win anyway, it's a joke."
And get real, Maine wouldn't win even if non-AE sports counted. BU and UNH both beat them in hockey, and UNH and UVM have pretty good ski programs.
Quit your bitching. The league is not biased against Maine.

First of all.....I'll bitch all I want. Secondly, did I say don't talk about the Commish's Cup? I might dismiss its importance, but it is obviously very appropriate and timely to discuss.........now back to AE men's hoop recruits......yawn.

Re: Big deal..... -- NU Hoop Fan, 22:22:45 05/27/03 Tue
Hey Jeff,
Not to put a feather in BU's cap, but they also sponsor 4 sports that the AE doesn't sponsor (M/W Hockey [ok, so their women's hockey team is in the neophyte stage], and M/W crew).
NU also has the same 5 sports as Maine that the AE doesn't compete in, so what's your excuse?
The cost of having both men's and women's crew is ridiculous, believe it or not. Someone told me the costs of crew, and I nearly died.
I'm sure BU is the same as NU, but most of the major donors to the athletic department at NU are former rowers, and in fact NU Men's crew just announced a program to try and endow a complete boat of rowers plus the coaching position.

No excuses NU Hoop Fan.....Maine continues to be strong in womens hoop, baseball and field hockey......weak in sports they have always been weak in. Personally, I like the way Maine puts more resources into the "glamour" sports.

Back To What Matters... -- Don't Sweat Rhett, 11:42:19 05/28/03 Wed
Fellas,
Regardless of our individual biases, I've always treated intercollegiate sports as athlete-centric. Something like the Commissioner's Cup is a time not only to celebrate who finished first, but all of the athletes for a job well done.
When all is said and done, I'd rather not bitch about another school in lue of appreciating our student-athletes, whichever school they represent. Without college athletics, I don't think our lives would be as rich as they are. I love all of you guys, no matter how much of a puss MaineJeff is.

Re: Back To What Matters... -- rozzie, 12:41:43 05/28/03 Wed
ohm'god.....i'm about to do something i never thought i'd do, defend mainejeff. put simply, he wants the conference to do better and he's passionate about that. we have all bitched ad nauseum about what complete and clueless boneheaded administrators populate both the AE office and various AD's offices of the conference schools. i think we all agree that things could be done better which would raise the profile of AE and its conference schools and honestly, i think mainejeff is just wearing his heart on his sleeve when it comes to these issues and there's nothing wrong with that.....does he go overboard? maybe, but i find he only gets personal when someone else starts it.....i know because i've been there before with him, starting it. so in the end, let's give him his due...if there were more people as passionate about the success of their alma mater and the AE in general, we'd all be much happier. also, a quote said by an Indiana Men's Basketball Assistant to then freshman player Dan Dakich about Bobby Knight might be applicable to mainejeff's posts....."when he calls you an a**hole, don't listen. when he tells you why you're an a**hole, listen."

You both make very valid points but mainejeff has to get off this kick of bashing AE Hoop, I'd rather read basketball then nothing and if it wasn't for basketball this site would be pretty much lie dormant.

Re: Back To What Matters...- Don't Sweat Rhett & Rozzie -- rozzie, 15:22:10 05/28/03 Wed
patch, i agree he's been bitching about men's basketball and quite frankly, i agree with you, it's the only reason i visit this site. i think mainejeff's point is that prior to the CAA 4 defection, the talent level for the conference was consistently high--Vin Baker, Speedy Claxton, Malik Rose, Tunji Awojobi, Andy Bedard, etc....i think we can all agree that the overall talent level has declined considerably and only time will allow that to be re-built. i think that's mainejeff's point, i.e. that the talent level is down and the conference is doing nothing to help encourage better talent........in my mind it doesn't matter. it's D1 hoops which i love and i will follow, but i do agree with his frustration.
